Croatia is a country in Eastern Europe on the Adriatic coast. If it has more than a thousand islands, it’s also crossed by the Dinaric Alps. Its capital, Zagreb, stands out for its medieval high-rise (Gornji Grad) and its many museums. Dubrovnik is a fortified coastal city whose huge 16th century ramparts surround the old center with Gothic and Renaissance buildings.
Eight areas in the country have been designated national parks, and the landscape in these areas is afforded extra protection from development. Currently, there are ten sites in Croatia inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites and 15 sites on the tentative list.
