The Origins of the Festival
In 1643, when the South of France was struck by plague, an Alderman promise to pay tribute to Virgin Mary if Lyon was spared. In 1852, it became a popular festival when a statue of the Mary was erected next to the Basilica and spontaneously the people put a candle outside on their windows. Today the candles became real artistic light shows and the Festival of Light Of Lyon attracts millions of people.
